After he returned home Jerry let Sara know the neighbors were on the level and could handily feed themselves thank you very much. “Sara, Teresa, gather round please. Thank you. I’m thinking of offering a deal to the new neighbors and want to get your advice.” Jerry had the ladies full attentions. “It looks like they plan to stay a while and I think we can help each other out. How about we offer them a mutual protection pact.” “I know what that is” stated Teresa. “We scratch their backs and they watch ours.” “Very good” said Sara. “It’s a win-win right? We can cover each other from those “Others” out there.” Jerry had held up his hands and made quote signs in the air when he had said the “O” word. “Sounds good to me” said Sara. “Sounds good to me” said Teresa, mimicking Sara. Sara looked at the ceiling with her eyes closed. “There’s that sense of humor again.” “Okay then it’s decided. I could give them one of our handy talkies but I only bought two of them. Why I only bought two I’ll never know, they were only 40 bucks apiece.” “We should hold on to them grandpa.” In the end the new neighbors agreed to the plan and they came up with a low-tech signal which would work night and day. Jerry silently prayed he wouldn’t hear the sound of metal pans being banged together anytime soon.
